Recycled plastic lumber is a building material made from plastic bottles and other plastic waste. Unlike traditional lumber, it won't rot or absorb water, and it is highly resistant to insect damage, so it is well-suited for marine and outdoor applications. Recycled plastic lumber is worth considering as an alternative to traditional lumber for most building projects, with the exception of interior residential projects.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the exception noted above?

OG12 OG15 OG16 OG17 OG18 OG19 OG20 OG2022 When there is less rainfall than normal, the water level of Australian rivers falls and the rivers flow more slowly. Because algae whose habitat is river water grow best in slow-moving water, the amount of algae per unit of water generally increases when there has been little rain. By contrast, however, following a period of extreme drought, algae levels are low even in very slow-moving river water.Which of the following, if true, does most to explain the contrast described above?

In order to promote plant growth, experts recommend that gardeners spread a generous amount of mulch around the plants to inhibit weed growth. Accordingly, the director of Sunlight Community Garden instructed volunteers to use plenty of mulch in their yearly landscaping, and the volunteers enthusiastically used up all of the available mulch. Nevertheless, plant productivity later fell somewhat.

Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain why acting on the experts’ recommendation failed to achieve its goal?

The ancient Nubians inhabited an area in which typhus occurred, yet surprisingly few of their skeletons show the usual evidence of this disease. The skeletons do show deposits of tetracycline, an antibiotic produced by a bacterium common in Nubian soil. This bacterium can flourish on the dried grain used for making two staples of the Nubian diet, beer and bread. Thus, tetracycline in their food probably explains the low incidence of typhus among ancient Nubians. Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument relies?
OG15 OG16 OG17 GWD OG18 Which of the following most logically completes the argument? The attribution of the choral work Lacrimae to the composer Pescard (1400-1474) has been regarded as tentative, since it was based on a single treatise from the early 1500's that named Pescard as the composer. Recently, several musical treatises from the late 1500's have come to light, all of which name Pescard as the composer of Lacrimae. Unfortunately, these newly discovered treatises lend no support to the attribution of Lacrimae to Pescard, since _______.
GWD which of the following most logically completes the argument below?According to promotional material published by the city of Springfield, more tourists stay in hotels in Springfield than stay in the neighboring city of Harristown. A brochure from the largest hotel in Harristown claims that more tourists stay in that hotel than stay in the Royal Arms Hotel in Springfield. If both of these sources are accurate, however, the "Report on Tourism" for the region must be in error in stating that _____.
GWD PREP2012 The cause of the wreck of the ship Edmund Fitzgeraid in a severe storm on lake Superior is still unknown , when the sunken wreckage of the vessel was found , searchers discovered the hull in two pieces lying close together , The storm's violent waves would have caused separate pieces floating even briefly on the surface to drift apart. Therefore, the breakup of the hull can be ruled out as the cause of the sinking.Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
OG15 OG16 OG17 OG18 Which of the following most logically completes the passage?A recent government study links the high rates of respiratory ailments in Groverston to airborne pollutants released by the Woodco plywood manufacturing plant there. To address the problem the government imposed strict regulations on emissions which will go into effect in four years. Although Woodco plans to cut its emissions in half two years ahead of schedule, it is unlikely that the rate of respiratory ailments will decline before the regulations go into effect, since _______.
Manhattan The children in the second grade at a local elementary school scored lower on tests of math skills this year than the second graders did last year. The school board blames the disappointing results on the budget cuts that forced the school to consolidate several classes of second-grade students, thus depriving them of the individualized attention that they had previously enjoyed.Which of the following, if true, best supports the explanation offered by the school board for the students' lower test scores?
Magoosh Along the mudflats of Garantia exist two types of annelids: earthworms and lugworms. Earthworms tend to emerge from the mud early in the morning when there is more moisture and nutrients. As a result, earthworms have access to more nutrients and thus reproduce far faster than the lugworm, which spends much of the day submerged in the mud. Nonetheless, the lugworm population far outnumbers that of the earthworm.Which of the following, if true, helps LEAST to resolve the apparent discrepancy noted above?

OG21 OG2022 In persons with astigmatism, the clear outer layer of the eye is deformed in a way that impairs and sometimes distorts vision. The elongated figures in the paintings of El Greco (1541-1614) were so unusual that some critics sought to explain them by hypothesizing that without knowing it, El Greco had an astigmatism that caused everything to appear to him in the distorted way that was characteristic of his painted figures. The proposed explanation is most vulnerable to the criticism that it fails to
Seventeenthcentury philosopher John Locke stated that as much as 99 percent of the value of any useful product can be attributed to "the effects of labor."For Locke's intellectual heirs it was only a short step to the "labor theory of value,"whose formulators held that 100 percent of the value of any product is generated by labor(the human work needed to produce goods) and that therefore the employer who appropriates any part of the product's value as profit is practicing theft.Although human effort is required to produce goodsfor the consumer market, effort is also invested in making capital goods(tools, machines, etc.), which are used to facilitate the production of consumer goods. In modern economies about one-third of the total output of consumer goods is attributable tothe use of capital goods. Approximately two-thirds of the income derived from this total output is paid out to workers as wages and salaries, the remainingthird serving as compensation to the owners of the capital goods. Moreover, part of this remaining thirdis received by workers who are shareholders, pension beneficiaries, and the like. The labor theory of value systematically disregards the productive contribution of capital goods-a failing for which Locke must bear part of the blame.
OG15 OG16 OG17 The following was excerpted from the speech of a spokesperson for Synthetic Farm Products, Inc.:"Many farmers who invested in the equipment needed to make the switch from synthetic to organic fertilizers and pesticides feel that it would be too expensive to resume synthetic farming at this point. But studies of farmers who switched to organic farming last year indicate that their current crop yields are lower. Hence their purchase of organic farming equipment, a relatively minor investment compared to the losses that would result from continued lower crop yields, cannot justify persisting on an unwise course. And the choice to farm organically is financially unwise, given that it was motivated by environmental rather than economic concerns."Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Many [hl:2]politicians, business leaders, and scholars[/hl:2] discount the role of public policy and emphasize the role of the labor market when explaining employers' maternity-leave policies, arguing that prior to the passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, employers were already providing maternity leave in response to the increase in the number of women workers. Employers did create maternity-leave programs n the 1970's and 1980's, but not as a purely voluntary response in the absence of any government mandate. In 1972, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) ruled that employers who allowed leaves for disabling medical conditions must also allow them for maternity and that failure to do so would constitute sex discrimination under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As early as 1973, a survey found that 58 percent of large employers had responded with new maternity-leave policies. Because the 1972 EEOC ruling was contested in court, the ruling won press attention that popularized maternity-leave policies. Yet perhaps because the Supreme Court later struck down the ruling, politicians and scholars have failed to recognize its effects, assuming that employers adopted maternity-leave policies in response to the growing feminization of the workforce.
OG15 OG16 OG17 The following appeared in a memorandum to the work-group supervisors of the GBS Company:"The CoffeeCart beverage and food service located in the lobby of our main office building is not earning enough in sales to cover its costs, and so the cart may discontinue operating at GBS. Given the low staff morale, as evidenced by the increase in the number of employees leaving the company, the loss of this service could present a problem, especially since the staff morale questionnaire showed widespread dissatisfaction with the snack machines. Therefore, supervisors should remind the employees in their group to patronize the cart—after all, it was leased for their convenience so that they would not have to walk over to the cafeteria on breaks."Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.
James: The price of credit defaults swaps (CDS) for ABC company is exploding to the upside. Credit default swaps are effectively insurance contracts on the possibility of a company defaulting on its loans. CDS prices have gone up, partly because ABC took out more loans than they can handle. These additional loans increase the risk of default and are passed on to CDS investors in the form of more expensived insurance premiums. Therefore, reducing the quantity of unnecessary loans will be effective in lowering the price of credit default swap contracts.Alexis: In many cases, the unnecessary loans that you mention are decisions made by upper management on behalf of the company. CEO's will often choose the financing option that maximizes the debt to equity ratio and potential valuation of the company, but may not necessarily benefit the company. As a result, in order to succeed in reducing the price of credit default swaps, we should allow the company's board of direcctors to vote on which form of financing the company should allow and which forms it shoud not allow. In the table below, identify the assumptions upon which each person's argument depends. Choose one option for each column.
